Halloween nightmare: 5 killed in overnight house fire

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Police now say five people are dead after a fire swept through a two-apartment building near the University of Southern Maine's commuter campus.

Initially, it was thought four people died in the fire early Saturday morning. Portland Fire Chief Jerry LaMoria later said there was a fifth victim.

It's uncertain if any of the victims are USM students.

The fire, which gutted the two-story structure, was reported at 7:17 a.m.

One person suffered severe burns and jumped from a second-story window. He was reported in critical condition in the burn unit of a Boston hospital. Another person was treated and released from a hospital and seven people escaped the building
