Parent opens fire in high school parking lot, neighbors say they are shocked but not surprised

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A fight at a high school basketball games turns into gunshots in the parking lot. Two people are hit including a teacher from Wisconsin Lutheran High School.

Police continue to look for the suspect, it's believed it was a parent who allegedly pulled the trigger.

FOX6 News spoke with neighbors living nearby and parents picking up their children. They were shocked to hear the supposed gunman was an adult, but not too surprised a shooting occurred.

But Thursday night it was the two foes whose heated argument escalated into gunfire. Police say it all began during a basketball game where two girls, one who was a Wisconsin Lutheran High School student, got into a fight.

Although the girls were escorted out at different times, they met up in the parking lot and continued to brawl. Others joined in, including a parent.

During the confrontation, the father of one of the female students allegedly pulled out a gun and shot a 15-year-old boy.

"The fact that it turned out to be an adult at a high school function where they are supposed to be having fun and somebody is packing a gun is pretty bad," said Brigid Brandt, lives across the street from school.

Many parents were disappointed to hear about the violent ruckus that happened at the religious school.

"For a parent to be involved I'm not happy at all, but I'm glad we did receive a phone call at the time we did. I'm glad they were up on it and took care of the situation," said Tine Lockwood, parent of student at Lutheran High School.

The teenage boy who did not attend either of the schools at the game was hit by the bullet and taken to the hospital. A teacher at the school who was trying to break up the fight was grazed by that same round.

School officials released a statement saying in part, "moving forward, we will review the safety policies regarding activities at school that are open to the public to ensure the safety of our students is top priority."

Friday morning, January 16th, Milwaukee police officers had a presence at the school.

While some parents are still alarmed, others say their kids weren't too affected.

"He says he still feels safe coming here and it's a very nice school, he enjoys it," said Lockwood.

The 15-year-old boy has been released from the hospital and fortunately both victims are expected to be okay.

As for the parent, the alleged gunman responsible, police have identified him and continue to look for him.
