Desperate to find the driver, Marquette students turn to social media after hit-and-run on campus
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A 25-year-old Marquette University international graduate student was seriously injured Tuesday night, January 20th in a hit-and-run on Marquette's campus. It happened near 17th and Wells -- and the driver hasn't been identified.
We're told the graduate student suffered serious injuries. She's in stable condition at the hospital. Because of the extent of her injuries, she hasn't been able to help police find the driver. That's why police are relying on the public for help more than ever.
Marquette students are turning to social media -- hoping spreading the word about what happened will help to identify the driver responsible.
"I think it's really despicable. Anything you can do to help the police to help identify and catch this guy is really all that we can ask for," Marquette student Ben Braun said.
"You would think that someone would stop and all that. When I saw the thing online about the picture of the car, I shared it on Facebook and so far a lot of people have been sharing it around," Marquette student Kate O'Neill said.
"Any leads we get -- we`ll take that to the 'nth' degree. Sometimes they are able to pan out and we are able to locate the vehicle," Milwaukee police said.
Police say they have been getting calls regarding this case -- but so far, nothing to lead them to the suspect or vehicle in question. That vehicle is a 1998 Chevy Lumina-type vehicle -- gold or gray in color.
"Marquette is definitely coming together to help find out who actually did it and to make sure the students alright ," O'Neill, who lives in the area where the incident happened said. "The lights take too long and everyone is trying to get around everywhere. It's something that we could see happening but it hasn`t happened here before."
The incident has some Marquette students thinking twice.
"It`s the old-school kindergarten phrase -- look both ways before you cross the street," Braun said.
MU's Vice President for Student Affairs issued the following statement:
"Our Campus Ministry and International Education staff members are with the student in the hospital and we are working to provide her and her family every available resource. We have often said that it is in times of adversity when our close campus community is at its best, and we ask once again that we come together to support one another. We also ask that you please support our student and those closest to her in prayer, and remember that we have numerous resources on campus to assist you. Our Counseling Center, Residence Life and Student Affairs staff are available to meet and talk with you as needed."
