"I think this would really help:" Greenfield third-grader could win $10,000 for her school!

GREENFIELD (WITI) -- Annabelle Tornio, a third-grade student from Edgewood Elementary in Greenfield has emerged with top honors in the 3rd – 5th grade section of the Scotties National Trees Rock Video Contest.

The grand prize winner will receive $10,000 for their school to use towards a sustainable project, such as tree plantings, outdoor classrooms, playgrounds, athletic fields, gardens and greenhouses.

At Annabelle's school, the south end of the playground is lacking trees.

"We would spread them out, so when it is hot outside they can get some shade," Annabelle said.

The north playground's equipment is outdated -- and is scheduled to be torn down this summer. The school already has a $15,000 grant, but that won't be enough, so they're trying to raise more money.

"I think this would really help," Annabelle said.

"We could do all the things we have wanted to do and what the kids have said they would like to see outside," Edgewood Elementary Principal Sue Sterner said.

When asked why Annabelle chose to enter the Trees Rock Video Contest, her mom Stacy Tornio said: “Our school is currently undergoing a major ‘Replace Our Playground’ initiative because we have outdated equipment on-site that will soon be removed. We have been putting a lot of time and effort into raising money for this Playground Fund, and getting the kids excited about helping out. When we saw the Trees Rock contest, we knew it was a perfect fit.”

Winners will be chosen by voters across America who can watch the top videos and vote for their favorite from January 12th through February 6th on www.scottiestreesrock.com.

The winners in both categories will be announced on Feb 15th and winner events will be celebrated in spring 2015.
