Governor Scott Walker fires back following President Obama’s criticism of “Right-to-Work” law

MADISON (AP) — Governor Scott Walker says President Barack Obama should look to his state as an example of how to improve the economy, rather than criticize his signing of a Right-to-Work bill into law.

Obama issued a statement Monday night, March 9th after Walker signed the bill, saying Right-to-Work “will weaken, rather than strengthen workers.” Obama says Walker, a likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate, should do more to help working-class Americans “by taking meaningful action to raise their wages and offer them … paid leave.”

President Obama’s full statement reads as follows:

“It’s no coincidence that the rise of the middle class in America coincided in large part with the rise of unions – workers who organized together for higher wages, better working conditions, and the benefits and protections that most workers take for granted today. So it’s inexcusable that, over the past several years, just when middle-class families and workers need that kind of security the most, there’s been a sustained, coordinated assault on unions, led by powerful interests and their allies in government.

So I’m deeply disappointed that a new anti-worker law in Wisconsin will weaken, rather than strengthen workers in the new economy. Wisconsin is a state built by labor, with a proud pro-worker past. So even as its governor claims victory over working Americans, I’d encourage him to try and score a victory for working Americans – by taking meaningful action to raise their wages and offer them the security of paid leave. That’s how you give hardworking middle-class families a fair shot in the new economy – not by stripping their rights in the workplace, but by offering them all the tools they need to get ahead.”

Walker says in his statement that the law prohibiting private-sector workers from having to join a union or pay dues gives them the power to choose and provides the state with “one more tool to encourage job creators to continue investing and expanding.”

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, a group that advocated for the law has also weighed on on Obama’s statement. WMC President/CEO Kurt R. Bauer said:

“It’s disappointing that President Obama has come out against a policy that gives workers freedom of choice in the workplace. The fact is, right to work states grow jobs and wages twice as fast as forced-union states do. By contrast, the President supports a wage policy that the Congressional Budget Office said will likely kill 500,000 American jobs. Gov. Walker remains focused on providing freedom and economic opportunity to workers.”C

    Govenor Walker, if people don’t want to join a union then why do they choose to work at a company that is union? Could it be that they want the higher wage and better benefits yet don’t want to pay dues for them? Why not put in place a tier plan? Those who join the union and pay dues get the negotiated wages and benefits. Those who choose not to join and pay dues receive the pay and benefits that said company wants to pay them. Each employee has a choice and nobody feels they are being “forced”.

    This shows again how totally out of touch this petulant, narcissistic, man-child who occupies the highest office is.

    His cure for bringing jobs and business to the State of Wisconsin is to give workers raises and paid vacations. I wonder if our nation will survive this last 20 or so months of this creature as president.

    There have been several companies which have relocated or expanded in right to works states rather than Wisconsin due to Wisconsin not being a right to work state. This new law will help the economy of Wisconsin.

    Workers and employees will now have a choice on whether to pay union dues. These dues have until now been forcibly taken from the employees, they had no choice in the matter. In fact, if you did not agree to be forced to join the union, you could not be an employee at the business.

    The laws that benefit workers are on the books. These laws govern work hours, lunches and breaks, worker safety, etc. The union has pretty much outlived it usefulness. The union dues that were forcibly stolen from employees checks was used to give hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign contributions to mostly Democrat candidates. This of course, is one of the primary reasons that Democrats are so much against right to work laws.

    Having worked numerous years in a non “right to work” state and now several years in a “right to work” state, I can say this. “Right to work” states are terrible, the wording alone would make you think it’s great for employee’s when all it does is benefit the employer. Employers in these states have a right to fire employee’s for anything they see fit, including firing an employee as to assure the employer doesn’t have to give that person benefits. GE is one of the worst offenders, I had worked there for 3 years, I had a doctors appointment that I told them I needed to go to and would need the day off, I told them a week in advance. The day after the appointment I had went to work and expected my security badge to let me through the gates, however it wasn’t working, come to find out I was fired for going to a doctor’s appointment and was never told. And sure, you’d say that is illegal and they can’t get away with that, in a non right to work state you’d be right. In a right to work state however they can fire you for any reason, I even talked to a lawyer and was told that I had no case. Obviously there are a few things they can’t fire you for, discrimination as an example, that being said right to work should be taken at the almost literal form that it says, “right to work” aka “right to employer”
