Donate food to people in need without leaving your house

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Food is always in demand at Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, as nearly 400,000 Wisconsinities rely on this organization to put food on the table.

Recognizing this need, Charlie Dennert was inspired to help Feeding America with one of its biggest food drives of the year.

"We're helping out people who maybe can't help themselves or need the help so that's kind of what we're all about," said Dennert.

For the past 9-years, Dennert has played a role in "Scouting for Food."

Last weekend, area Boy Scouts dropped off bags at door steps to homes across the Greater Milwaukee Area hoping people will fill them with food for people in need.

"It's outstanding to see young leaders becoming engaged in the community," said Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin President and CEO Charles McLimans.

"Scouting for Food" began in 1987 and since then Boy Scouts have collected 3.5 million pounds of food.

"Last year we raised 161,000 pounds so we'd love to hit 200,000 pounds this year," said McLimans.

Everyone is asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items.

"Cans of tuna, peanut butter and jelly, boxes of macaroni and cheese," said McLimans.

Many of the shelves at Feeding America are becoming bare as food donations tend to dwindle after the holidays.

Dennert is hoping he sees the same turn-out as years past when he's been out collecting the bags.

"It's pretty amazing how many people are really generous with their food and they give a lot to the people. We always end up with a lot of food to sort, which is good. That's always a good problem to have," said Dennert.

If you received a bag at your door then you're asked to place a filled bag outside of your door before 9 am on Saturday.

Otherwise, if you didn't receive a bag you can you can drop one off at any area Pick n' Save store.
