"They don't know how to respect life:" Three wounded in shooting on Milwaukee's north side

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Violence breaks out between two families and ends with three people suffering from gunshot wounds. It happened Wednesday night on Milwaukee's north side near 14th and Finn.

The triple shooting happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. -- all because of a dispute that got out of hand.

Police cars blocked off the street Wednesday night, April 1st, as officers tried to piece together what led to a triple shooting. FOX6 News is told a dispute between two families left three men with non-life threatening injuries.

But it begs the question: How did we even get to this kind of gun violence?

"Pulling a gun should be the last thing you do," said Dawayne Thomas, lives nearby.

For about three years, Dawayne Thomas has lived on the street that was a scene of Wednesday's shooting. He says gun violence isn't a problem very often on his block, but nearby...

"A block to the south of me and block to the north of me, they can get kind of noisy sometimes," said Thomas.

Thomas thinks the heart of the problem lies in general disregard for human life.

"But see, people out here as far as young people and everything, they don't know nothing about that. They don't know how to respect life, they don't have no respect for life," said Thomas.

FOX6 News also spoke with the president of MICAH, an organization dedicated to social justice that is currently working to reduce violence and recidivism in areas like this.

"That is the most imprisoned zip code in the nation, 53206. It is one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the nation and so you can see where the frustration boils over in those areas," said President of MICAH, Reverend Willie Brisco.

Reverend Brisco says you'd definitely find churches and other programs trying to help improve these areas. But he also says he hopes the city can come together to solve such problems.

For Thomas, an ex-marine, he just wishes young people would seek out someone like himself to learn about handling conflict responsibly.

"I know how to be forceful without using a weapon. I know how to talk to you without happening to be in violence," said Thomas.

Police were not able to give many updates on the investigation into the shooting. They are still searching for suspects.
