"We're very lucky:" Four-year-old girl grazed by gunfire while playing inside home

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating an incident in which a four-year-old girl was shot and wounded while playing in a home near 67th and Capitol Drive. It happened shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14th. A family member tells FOX6 News the injury is a graze wound on a leg. The girl was released from the hospital and able to return home on Wednesday night.

Police say unknown subject(s) fired a total of 13 rounds outside a residence -- one of which struck the child, who was playing on a couch in the living room. She was taken to the hospital for treatment -- and is expected to fully recover.

"She heard the shots and stuff and she didn't know. And then she heard the baby cry and she pulled the baby from the front of the window," said Mickey Govani, the girl's grandfather. "Right where she was laying at, at least, I'm thinking that it was about four bullets went through that area."

Investigators now believe the house and at least one person inside was targeted by the shooters in this case. No one is in custody.

"We're very lucky.  We're lucky and we're grateful that she's still here with us, you know what I mean?  So we're happy about that," said Govani.

Neighbors are also anxious about what happened Tuesday.

"I'm kind of scared for my mother to be out and in the yard, you know?  This is a safe neighborhood," said Keith Torrence, neighbor.

"It's making us think like, whether we should stay or leave," said James Madison, neighbor.

The eighth shooting this week came on a particularly violent day. Milwaukee saw three murders Tuesday -- a fatal stabbing at 13th & Locust, a fatal shooting at 27th and Melvina and a fatal battery incident near 9th and Clarke.

Anyone with information regarding any of these incidents is asked to call the Milwaukee police at 414-935-7271.
