Police: 10-year-old girl who said she was shot in Washington Park fabricated story; shot herself

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police now say a reported shooting involving a 10-year-old girl in Washington Park was fabricated.

Police said the 10-year-old girl indicated she was playing with friends on Friday evening, September 4th around 5:30 p.m. when she heard a "pop" and realized she was shot.

Police said the girl then walked home and was taken to a hospital two hours later by her parents for treatment of a minor injury.

Now, police say further investigation into this incident has revealed the girl fabricated the story after she accidentally shot herself while playing with a firearm in her home.

Police say an investigation into the incident, including how the girl accessed the gun is ongoing.
