"Drive defensively:" WisDOT launches social media messages on the 'Move Over Law'

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) launched a social media campaign this week in an effort to increase compliance with the state’s Move Over Law.

The Move Over Law requires drivers to move over or slow down when encountering law enforcement officers, highway maintenance crews, tow truck operators and others who work on the side of roads within a few feet of fast-moving traffic.

Authorities hope to drive points home with videos from people who experienced first-hand what happens when you don't pull over.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke also has a message for drivers who might make risky decisions behind the wheel.

"Drive defensively pay attention to your surroundings put all the communication devices down," said Clarke.

There are penalties for not adhering to the Move Over Law. But what could be even more troublesome is causing an accident or interfering with an emergency vehicle or personnel.

The new #MoveOver campaign will feature WisDOT Facebook videos of individuals who experienced first-hand the devastating effects of crashes involving Move Over Law violations:

An animated video also explains clearly and concisely what the Move Over Law requires drivers to do in order to establish a safety zone for workers on the side of roadways. Facebook and Twitter users can take a short survey to help expand their awareness and understanding of the Move Over Law.

The new videos will be posted during the week at: facebook.com/WisDOT.
