Two children taken to the hospital after fire at home on Milwaukee's north side

MILWAUKEE -- Two children were taken to the hospital after a fire at a home on the city's north side early Monday morning, October 5th.  It happened near 38th and Silver Spring Drive.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 1:40 a.m. Officials say the fire on the first floor was heavily involved -- and confirmed there were people inside the home.

While some firefighters worked to put out the flames, others performed search and rescue operations. They found the young child on the second floor, and rushed the child to paramedics.

The deputy fire chief says the child initially wasn't breathing and was taken to Children's Hospital. He says it appears the child's condition has since improved.

We're told a second child made it out of the home, but was having trouble breathing -- so that child was also taken to the hospital.

Firefighters did not report seeing or hearing smoke detectors in the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
