It happened around 4:45 p.m.

Police say two suspects were shooting at each other -- and the boy, who was not the target, was hit.

"I could see there was two vehicles speeding down and they`re shooting back and forth at one another," Greg McElwee said.

Not everyone who was in the area saw the shooting.

"I just heard multiple gunshots," Charles Bishop said.

Bishop says he ran out of his home to grab some kids, including his own, that had just gotten off the bus.

"At that point I didn`t know what to think. I'm searching every kid to make sure they`re like, is everybody alright? Is everyone OK?" Bishop said.

Bishop says that's when he noticed the 11-year-old boy.

"He looked down and realized there was blood everywhere and I'm like 'let me see you' and I looked and I grabbed a towel. He got shot in his hand. That's when the shock came in and he just started crying asking for his parents as any kid would do," Bishop said.

The boy is expected to survive. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, and his parents were contacted.

At the scene, officers laid down at least 15 evidence markers where bullet casings were found -- proving to neighbors that this could have been much worse.

"That`s a terrible thing we have to go through -- day-to-day in fear that we might possibly get hit by a stray bullet or someone might be careless. It's foolish -- and selfish as well," McElwee said.

"I'm seeing a lot of kids fall victim to a lot of things that have nothing to do with them. I just hope that everything be alright with him," Bishop said.
