"Learning a little more hands-on:" East Troy kindergartners host food drive for the community

EAST TROY -- The kindergartners at Doubek Elementary School are learning from more than the books in the classroom -- they're also learning life lessons through their community.

"A way that we can make learning a little more hands-on and engaging for our kids and hope that they take home a little more," said Jenny Ledin, Doubek Elementary 5K teacher and aid.

Part of their curriculum is called "Problem Based Learning."

"The students are presented with a problem and then they work together to figure out a solution and how they can solve that problem," said Ledin.

When the students took a field trip to the East Troy Food Pantry, they noticed a problem.

"The freezer was empty," said Madalyne Stamm, 5K student.

There wasn't enough food, so the students began brainstorming a solution.

"Buy some food and take it there," said Greyson Zess, 5K student.

The students decided to host a food drive. With the help of some of the high school students, they made posters to hang around town and set up collection sites.

When it's over, they'll stuff the food on a bus and deliver it to the East Troy Food Pantry.

The food will be collected at Doubek Elementary, Prairie View Elementary, along with East Troy Middle and High School until December 14th.

On December 15th, they'll be stuffing the bus at Doubek Elementary beginning at 9:30 a.m.

If you're interested in helping, you can drop off donations during school hours.

The students are asking for toiletries items along with non-perishable foods.
