"We're truly blessed:" Good news for family evicted before Thanksgiving after landlord murdered

MILWAUKEE -- A tragic chain of events left a Milwaukee family homeless. Their landlord was murdered, and the apartment he owned was deemed unlivable by city officials, so his tenants were left on the street. Now, FOX6 News has learned the family has been able to find a new place to live, just in time for the holidays.

For the Randle family, decorating a Christmas tree was something they thought wouldn't happen this Christmas.

But thanks to some very generous people, they have a new home ahead of Christmas.

On November 25th, one day before Thanksgiving, the family was evicted from their home near 51st and Center after the city said it was unsafe to live there.

We Energies officials discovered a gas leak in the basement.

Typically, the building's owner would fix the problem, but the landlord was murdered! Colin Alexander was shot and killed on November 13th.

"He was a nice guy. I`m sorry that that happened to him and I`m just continuing to pray for his family," Chequita Duck said. "It really was stressful getting put out the day before Thanksgiving."

For a week, the family stayed with Duck's mother.

"It wasn`t bad being there but you know, two different families, two different bedtimes -- everything had to come together so everyone could be comfortable," Randle said.

On Saturday, December 5th, thanks to family, friends and donations made via a GoFundMe.com account, this family now has a place to call their own.

"It feels good, you know? I thank everybody that helped -- people that did know us, people that didn`t know us. People reached out to us -- and me and my family,  we're real thankful for that," Randle said.

This family can now celebrate Christmas at home.

"We are truly blessed," Duck said.

Between the Community Advocates emergency funds and the GoFundMe.com account, just over $1,200 was raised for the family. They used the money for a security deposit, first month's rent and some essential household items.

As for Colin Alexander, 51-year-old Johnnie Tucker faces multiple criminal charges in connection with Alexander's death -- including first-degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.
