"I don't want to let him out of my sight," Crystal Matrau-Belt said of her newborn son, Jeremiah.

Jeremiah was born at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 12th -- a healthy baby boy, weighing in at a little more than eight pounds. He was 22 inches long.

"He has my lips for sure, but he looks like his dad," Matrau-Belt said.

Jeremiah wasn't supposed to arrive this early, but his mom's high blood pressure kept her in the hospital on Friday.

On Saturday, doctors decided to perform a C-section.

The baby's father, Emil Skokan III was at home with his future mother-in-law Peggy Nichols -- preparing for the baby's arrival.

"That was our plan. He was going to just stay at home, get things ready, because we didn't know it would be right then and there," Matrau-Belt said.

Jeremiah would be their first baby together, and Matrau-Belt's mother's first biological grandchild.

"That was her biggest thing, you know? She was just excited every day -- just checking in," Matrau-Belt said.

On Saturday, from the hospital, Matrau-Belt made the call. Jeremiah was about to be born.

She says she remembers her fiance's last words.

"That he would be on his way up here and he loved me and that he'd be here shortly," Matrau-Belt said.

Skokan III and Nichols were headed to Bronson Methodist Hospital when Skokan III lost control of the vehicle -- slamming into a tree.

Baby Jeremiah

Matrau-Belt was in her hospital room recovering when her father, step-father and step-mother delivered the news.

"I just remember all their faces, and I knew something was wrong. I just didn't know how bad it was," Matrau-Belt said.

Now, she's torn between joy and grief.

"It's a hard balance that I've been trying to -- that's what keeps me going -- (Jeremiah)," Matrau-Belt said.
