Winter storm leads to delays, cancellations at Mitchell Airport: "Hopefully we'll get there"

MILWAUKEE -- The winter storm that brought snow, sleet and freezing rain to southeastern Wisconsin on Monday, December 28th didn't just create a mess on area roadways. It also forced delays and cancellations for airlines at General Mitchell International Airport.

Flights cancelled/delayed due to weather

Dozens of flights into and out of Mitchell Airport were delayed on Monday, and some were cancelled.

A Winter Storm Warning took effect on Monday morning for all of southeastern Wisconsin, and it is expected to continue until 6:00 a.m. Tuesday.

"Hopefully we`ll get there," Sara Ward-Cassady said.

"We think the weather from (Sunday) in Dallas has affected the plane (Monday)," Alisa Kelly-Martina said.

Flights cancelled/delayed due to weather

Ward-Cassady and Kelly-Martina were stuck at Mitchell Airport Monday -- waiting with their husbands, hoping they'd be able to make it to Cabo San Lucas -- where it was partly cloudy and 70 degrees on Monday -- a far cry from conditions in southeastern Wisconsin.

"We had some coffee, now we`re here, eventually we`ll move through security and try to take a nap by our gate," Ward-Cassady said.

Ward-Cassady and Kelly-Martina weren't alone.

Flights cancelled/delayed due to weather

There were dozens of delayed flights at Mitchell Airport Monday. Some flights were cancelled altogether.

"12:00 I was supposed to leave and now it`s looking about 8 or 9," Daniel Peterson said.

Peterson was trying to get back home to Dallas on Monday -- his family, already there.

"They`re in Texas. They`re warm -- and I`m stuck in the cold," Peterson said.

Out on the tarmac, airport workers were hard at work plowing runways and ramps -- working to get planes in the air.

"We`re able to plow a two-mile-long runway, 200 feet wide in less than 20 minutes," Harold Mester, Mitchell Airport spokesman said.

Airport officials encourage passengers flying Monday or Tuesday to call ahead and check on their flights before showing up at the airport.
