Steven Avery's new attorney says she's confident his conviction will be vacated

CHICAGO -- Steven Avery's new attorney says she is confident her client's conviction will be vacated.

Avery is the subject of the popular Netflix series "Making A Murderer."

He was sentenced to serve life in prison for the murder of Teresa Halbach, a young photographer.

Prior to his conviction for the death of Halbach, a young photographer for Auto Trader magazine, Avery had been falsely accused of rape and served 18 years in prison.

He was exonerated in 2003 and was pursuing a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Manitowoc County and its sheriff when he was accused of murdering Halbach.

Avery's defense made the case that officers investigating Avery had a conflict of interest and stayed involved after they were ordered to hand over the investigation to a neighboring county.

When key pieces of evidence in the death of Teresa Halbach were found by Manitowoc officers involved in Avery's first case, the defense implied the evidence could have been planted.

The Netflix series calls Avery's conviction for the Halbach murder into question. The series has some calling for the release of Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, who is also serving a life sentence in this case.

This, as the prosecutor, Ken Kratz, officials in Manitowoc County and others are calling the documentary one-sided, indicating it left out evidence that proves Avery is guilty.

Chicago lawyer Kathleen Zellner on Friday, January 8th announced she is teaming up with the Midwest Innocence Project. The Law Firm of Kathleen T. Zellner and Associates has assumed representation of Avery in all of his pending criminal matters.

FOX6 News reached out to Zellner for an interview on Monday. Zellner said in a statement she is not doing interviews about this case right now -- and that they are examining Avery's legal options.

Zellner said they will present new evidence to "the appropriate court."
