Search warrant shows officer-involved shooting in Wauwatosa may have stemmed from a breakup

WAUWATOSA -- A search warrant obtained by FOX6 News shows that a domestic incident that led to an officer-involved shooting at the Normandy Village Apartments in Wauwatosa may have stemmed from a breakup.

The officer-involved shooting happened on Monday night, January 11th.

Police were called out to the Normandy Village Apartments, located near 124th and North Avenue in Wauwatosa around 8:00 p.m. for a domestic incident.

A tenant reported hearing a woman screaming and then seeing someone jump off a balcony.

When officers arrived, a chase ensued between officers and someone who was fleeing the scene.

Chief Weber said officers caught up to the fleeing suspect near N. 124 Street. At that time, a physical struggle ensued between the 34-year-old male suspect and a 50-year-old police supervisor -- and the suspect produced a knife.

"The suspect cut or slashed and stabbed at the supervisor repeatedly. Two of the other officers that were on the scene fired their service weapons to stop the threat. Each officer fired one round, we believe from their handgun, striking the suspect with a total of two rounds," Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said.

The 34-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital. His condition remains unknown.

Following the officer-involved shooting, investigators found the body of 32-year-old Lauren Johnson below the balcony of an apartment.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A search warrant, obtained by FOX6 News, was filed by a detective investigating the crime of first degree intentional homicide in connection with Johnson's death.

The search warrant shows that an autopsy was performed on Johnson, and a medical examiner determined the cause of death to be suffocation. Johnson's death was ruled a homicide. The search warrant notes that the manner of suffocation is under investigation.

According to the search warrant, the medical examiner believes Johnson was already dead when she fell to the ground from the upper balcony at the Normandy Village Apartments.

Johnson and the 34-year-old suspect in the officer-involved shooting were in a dating relationship and they were living together since November at Normandy Village Apartments, the search warrant shows.

The search warrant says witness statements indicated Johnson and the suspect broke up on the day of her death. Text messages and telephone conversations between Johnson and the suspect show that Johnson terminated the relationship on January 11th, according to the search warrant.

The telephone communications indicate the suspect in this case "refused to accept the breakup."

The search warrant shows that witnesses reported that Johnson complained that the suspect was "controlling, jealous and manipulative."

The search warrant asks that DNA from the suspect in the officer-involved shooting be compared with DNA recovered from Johnson's body during an autopsy -- and from items collected from the apartment at Normandy Village in order to support a charge of first degree intentional homicide against the suspect.

We should note -- that suspect has not yet been charged in connection with the officer-involved shooting, or for the death of Lauren Johnson.
