Derek Berger, who helped WFB Dominican to fifth-straight state title, announces resignation

WHITEFISH BAY -- The head coach of Whitefish Bay Dominican High School's boys basketball program, who helped the team to its fifth-straight title, has announced his resignation.

A statement from Whitefish Bay Dominican High School states that Derek Berger's resignation comes after eight years on the coaching staff.

Berger amassed a record of 101-11 in four seasons as the head coach at Dominican, including four-straight WIAA Division 4 state championships. The Knights finished the 2015-2016 season with a record of 27-1 and the school’s fifth-straight state title, a state record, the statement says.

In four seasons, the Knights lost only one conference game under Berger’s watch, en route to a Metro-Classic Conference Championship each year.

Whitefish Bay Dominican High School officials say Berger has cited family time as the reason for his resignation. He has two sons, ages five and seven.

“I have loved every minute of coaching Dominican basketball, but in the end, family is most important,” Berger said in the statement. "I have met many tremendous people at Dominican and learned more than I could ever imagine about relationships, sports, and life. My time at Dominican was story book and it will be missed. I would like to say thank you to everyone that helped and supported me through my time at Dominican.”
