Carl Barrett charged in fatal shooting of Jevontese Riley back in March

Carl Barrett

MILWAUKEE -- 39-year-old Carl Barrett of Milwaukee faces two criminal charges for his alleged role in the shooting death of Jevontese Riley. Riley, 23, was shot inside a home near 19th and Center on Thursday, March 17th.

Barrett faces the following charges:

According to the criminal complaint, Barrett had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend. The daughter of the girlfriend apparently called the girlfriend's son -- and indicated that "things were getting physical."

A short time later, the son of Barrett's girlfriend showed up at the house with a couple of friends including Riley. The complaint indicates there was a brief confrontation between Barrett and the girlfriend's son and friends. At that time, Barrett "walked into his bedroom and retrieved a medium to large frame silver revolver." One of the friends noticed the weapon -- and pulled out a gun of his own. The complaint says "the two started shooting simultaneously at each other."

Riley was shot -- and was able to leave the residence at the time. Riley collapsed a few houses to the north where he died despite life-saving efforts. The autopsy indicated Riley had five gunshot wounds caused by two bullets.

If convicted on the more serious charge, Barrett faces up to 60 years in prison.
