27-year-old man accused of opening fire on van; 17-year-old Kemone Love later died

MILWAUKEE COUNTY -- A Milwaukee man has been criminally charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Kemone Love. The shooting happened on April 11th near Green Bay and Capitol. Shortly thereafter, Love was dumped from a car at 19th and Atkinson. Love was one of five teens shot within a 24-hour span, and the second to lose his life.

The accused in this case is 27-year-old Leon Sills of Milwaukee, who is facing one count of first degree reckless homicide, use of a dangerous weapon -- and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to the criminal complaint, Kemone Love was found lying on the roadway near 19th and Atkinson on April 11th -- suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower jaw area. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy revealed Love had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators spoke with a witness, who indicated on April 11th, he was driving a van with several individuals inside, including Love. The witness said they were at a red light at Green Bay and Capitol when he recognized a vehicle belonging to Sills -- a man he said he knows through a friend. The van's driver told investigators he blew the horn in an effort to get Sills' attention, and Sills then apparently exited his vehicle, holding an assault-type rifle.

The witness said Sills began firing into the van.

The driver told police he then bailed from the van, which continued moving across the intersection until it ran into something.

The driver said he ran back over to the van and tried to drive it away from the scene. That's when he noticed Love suffering from a gunshot wound.

The van's driver said he flagged down police and directed them to Love's body.

The complaint indicates police found 13 casings and a firearm in the area near Green Bay and Capitol.

The complaint makes reference to a 2011 conviction for Sills for felony bail jumping.
