Child playing with torch sets fire inside detached garage in Hartford

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- A child playing with a trigger-ignited LP torch started a fire inside a detached garage in the Town of Hartford Friday, June 3rd.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the call came in shortly after 11:00 a.m.

Officials say upon arrival, smoke was observed coming out of the structure but no flames were observed. They were able to suppress the fire quickly so the structure did not become fully engulfed.



The investigation revealed a child playing with a trigger-ignited LP torch started a wall calendar on fire and the flames spread to the insulation in the attic area.

The fire caused approximately $10,000 worth of damage to the garage structure and roof, and approximately $2,500 worth of damage to the contents.

No injuries were reported.
