Mount Pleasant continues efforts to build more tiny homes for vets in need

MOUNT PLEASANT/RACINE -- Volunteers rolled up their sleeves and came together to help construct three tiny homes for homeless veterans in the area on Saturday.

The event took place in Mount Pleasant, and through a program called "Veterans Outreach Tiny Homes Community Build," volunteers from across the country including moms, bikers, young adults, local teamsters and civil groups, gathered to build three of 15 tiny homes to complete a village.

Racine has partnered with "Day One With Veterans Outreach" to ensure veterans in need will get into homes in 2016. The project is named after a young veteran with two children, James Peterson, who volunteered for the outreach and was tragically killed on Father's Day of 2015 by an impaired driver as he was heading home from a fundraiser for vets.

Once the village of tiny homes is complete, it will include art and music therapy, community gardens, outdoor exercise areas, trauma-specific resources and an apprenticeship program with local businesses.
