"We're people behind the counter:" Roanoke coffee shop charges customers more if they're mean

ROANOKE, Virginia -- A coffee shop in Roanoke, Virginia charges customers more for a cup of joe if they're mean!

Those with CUPS Coffee & Tea wrote on a sandwich board outside the coffee shop:

"One small coffee"
$5.00
"One small coffee, please"
$3.00
"Hello, I'd like one small coffee please."
$1.75

The sign is going viral -- with people loving the store's call for proper manners and the upcharge if customers don't say "hello" and "please."

Austin Simms with CUPS Coffee & Tea told WDBJ he was trying to be funny.

"I decided because I need to solve all the injustices of the world to start charging more for people who didn't take the time to say 'hello' and connect and realize we're all people behind the counter," Simms said.

Simms says he wrote the message on a Sunday. By Monday, it was in a newspaper in England. On Wednesday, a whole bunch of cameras started showing up, WDBJ says.
