"Hard to understand:" Turkish citizen living in U.S. anxiously waits to learn more on attempted military coup
MILWAUKEE -- Low-flying military jets buzzed over Turkey’s capital of Ankara. Soldiers blocked major bridges in Istanbul. State-run television announced that the military had imposed martial law. As those events unfold, some are anxiously awaiting news here in the U.S.
Turkey military units have attempted an uprising against the Turkish government.
FOX6 News spoke with on Turkish citizen who live here in the Milwaukee area. As differing reports are coming out of Turkey, he says "confusion" is the best way to describe the situation right now.
As images and reports of an attempted coup come come out of turkey, some here in America are anxiously awaiting for news and for the situation to resolve.
"I have family, mom and dad and other family relatives in Turkey," said Onur Asan, member of the Turkish American Society of Wisconsin.
Onur Asan is a Turkish citizen who's lived here for almost a decade and works at the Medical College of Wisconsin. But his family is still in Istanbul.
"I talked to them almost an hour ago," said Asan.
We talked with him by phone Friday evening, as he was trying to sort through the reports coming out of his home country.
"Confusion like what's going on then some of them are really afraid, I talked to my mom she was afraid but you know, they are praying," said Asan.
He says his family planned to stay home while the situation unfolded. In the meantime, he's anxiously checking media for updates.
"To me actually it doesn't sound like a real coup too. It's like I don't know, I mean there is something going on but I also am having a hard time to understand what that is," said Asan.
He also adds that it's very hard to watch this happen to his home country.
"It really makes you very sad from here and really concerned and really just pray for all the people in Turkey right now," said Asan.
Asan is also a member of the Turkish American Society of Wisconsin. In response to Friday's events, the group tweeted:
