"Do the right thing:" Young family offers $5,000 reward for information on Angelo Young's murder

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are hoping your tips can put a charge in a murder investigation that has gone cold. July 21st, 2016 marked one year since a Milwaukee teen was gunned down while walking home from work.

Angelo Young

Angelo Young's stepfather says the 18-year-old was just weeks away from enrolling at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also dreamed of enlisting in the Air Force.

Instead, he was killed in a robbery -- and now police want you to keep an eye out for a couple different things.

The intersection of Garfield Avenue and Palmer Street is one of the last intersections Angelo Young had to pass on his way home around 11:40 p.m. on July 21st, 2015.

Police believe multiple suspects tried to rob the teen. It ended with thieves killing the 18-year-old Rufus King graduate.

"What strikes you with this case is that it was a subject who did not have that prior connection to any crimes or criminal aspect of his life," said Milwaukee Police Detective Matthew Gadzalinski.

Matthew Gadzalinski is one of the detectives looking for Young's killer. He says the robbers took a distinctive backpack from Young. It's a black, gray and silver Element brand "Tigerleaf" design.

Gadzalinski also says surveillance video just a couple blocks from the shooting shows the vehicle they believe the suspects were driving.

"A late-90s Chevy Suburban-style vehicle, dark in color, that emitted some very loud type of noise whether it was muffler or engine noise," said Detective Gadzalinski.

Two weeks ago, Young's stepfather was among the relatives at a "stop the violence" basketball tournament played in honor of Young, and other homicide victims.

"You never think this would happen to individuals like that -- especially so young with such a promising future," said Demetrius Rice, Angelo Young's stepfather.

Both Demetrius Rice, and Detective Gadzalinski, believe someone out there knows who killed Angelo Young.

"I have faith in our citizens, the citizens of Milwaukee, that someone will find the intestinal fortitude to come forward and do the right thing," said Gadzalinski.

The family is offering a reward of a little more than $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest of Angelo Young's killer.

Rufus King High School now offers an annual scholarship award in Young's honor.
