Fatal pedestrian accident in Sheboygan County now being investigated as a hit-and-run

SHEBOYGAN -- Sheboygan County authorities announced Monday, July 11th that the fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early Sunday, July 3rd is now being investigated as a hit-and-run accident.

A 911 call came into the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center just after 4:30 a.m. advising that a vehicle struck a pedestrian on County Road P just north of County Road A, in the Town of Rhine. Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Deputies, Orange Cross Ambulance and Glenbeulah First Responders were dispatched to the scene.

Officials say the initial investigation showed a van was southbound on County Road P when it struck a pedestrian. The van operator remained at the scene and called law enforcement. However, after further investigation, it was revealed that the victim, 23-year-old Shawn Kaufert of Sheboygan Falls, was already deceased when he was struck by the van.

The autopsy revealed that Kaufert had been previously struck and killed by an unidentified vehicle. The vehicle left the scene after striking Kaufert.

The Sheriff's Office is still investigating the accident and is looking for any witnesses or information that may help identifty the suspect vehicle.
