Former Milwaukee therapist guilty at trial of sexual exploitation

A jury found a former Milwaukee therapist guilty of sexually exploiting a female client – but not guilty of sexually exploiting another woman.

It has been more than three years since prosecutors charged George Ramsey with sexually exploiting three of his former mental health clients. And six years since they first went to police.

"He chose these victims. These are the most vulnerable of our population," said Assistant District Attorney Sara Sadowski.

Two of the alleged victims told similar stories of the way Ramsey groped and assaulted them during private sessions at the now-shuttered Achievement Associates on Fond du Lac Avenue and New Beginnings Wellness Center near Sherman and Fond du Lac.

"Think about how similar their statements were," said Sadowski.

Therapist charged with sex crimes had history of rape arrests

A Milwaukee therapist charged with sexually exploiting three clients was arrested for rape four times before obtaining his first counseling license.

But both women offered testimony on Tuesday that differed somewhat from their original statements. Defense Attorney Matt Last said the case boiled down to the women's credibility.

Ramsey was convicted of sexually exploiting a client who gave police a detailed description of Ramsey's genitalia. The former therapist testified the client had accidentally walked in on him going to the bathroom.

"She was pretty particular about what she saw," Sadowski said.

One of the three victims the state planned to call did not show up to court and could not be located, so her charge was dismissed in this case. The jury deliberated the two remaining charges.

Ramsey had already been convicted of at least four other felonies more than 20 years ago – before he became a therapist. Over the years, at least seven women have accused him of sex crimes, including two who said he raped them at knifepoint. Wednesday's guilty verdict is his first conviction for a sex crime.

Two years and 10 months after he posted bail in this case – and after six jury trial dates were postponed – Ramsey is back in custody. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story identified a victim as being 81 years old at the time. Court filings listed an incorrect date of birth for that victim.
