Hamilton School District bus route changes after boy hit in parking lot

The Hamilton School District is making changes to its school bus routes after a boy was hit and killed in the parking lot in January.

School bus route changes

What we know:

Five-year-old Finn Katona died after he was hit by a school bus on Jan. 2 in the Silver Spring Intermediate School parking lot – while transferring buses to get to Willow Springs Learning Center.

The school made changes immediately after Katona's death to ensure students no longer transferred buses. Then the Hamilton School District voted on Monday night, Jan. 27 to add four buses dedicated exclusively to go to Willow Springs to help with safety and to combat traffic backups which were causing kids to be late.

Culver's fundraiser

What they're saying:

FOX6 News visited the Culver's restaurant in Sussex on Tuesday, Jan. 28. It was raising money for Katona's family. Twenty-five percent of Tuesday's sales were going to the family.

Parents and guardians shared their thoughts on the bus route changes – and why it is important to support the Katona family.

"I don’t know how my kids did that bus transfer – the older ones. Range of emotions. It was a really good decision on the school's part," said Hope Orvold, a parent.

"This is a small community, and it was a tragedy," said Sharon Smith, a grandmother.

Implementing the changes

What's next:

As for the bus route changes, Hamilton School District officials said those are anticipated to be implemented by Monday, Feb. 10.
