Milwaukee County bus driver arrested; 2 people hit, 1 killed

UPDATE: The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man that was killed as 79-year-old Robert Clemons.

A Milwaukee County Transit System bus hit two people – killing one of them – late Wednesday night, Dec. 25. The bus driver was taken into custody.

It happened near 47th and Villard on Milwaukee's north side. Police said two people were standing near a legally parked vehicle, trying to repair it, when the bus hit them around 10:30 p.m.

A 79-year-old victim died on the scene. A 37-year-old victim was taken to a hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

"Praying for the family, you never want anything like that to happen in general, but especially on Christmas," said Cortez Williford, who lives near the scene.

The bus remained at the scene, and police arrested the 51-year-old driver. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office will review charges.

MCTS issued the following statement:

"At approximately 10:32 p.m. on 12/25/2024, an MCTS bus heading west on Villard along Route 58 near 47th was involved in a deadly accident. One person was injured. Another person was fatally wounded. No passengers were on the bus at the time. The bus operator was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for medical evaluation. Milwaukee County Transit System is cooperating with law enforcement to determine what led to the accident.  Milwaukee County Transit System extends its deepest sympathies to the people impacted and their families by this tragic accident."
