Sussex school bus accident; funeral set for boy killed

The boy hit and killed by a school bus in Sussex will be laid to rest this weekend.

According to his obituary, 5-year-old Finn Katona's funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 in Menomonee Falls.

He's remembered as a "joyful presence that radiated to others."

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to a memorial fund that will help the youth programs he enjoyed.

Meanwhile, a new bus policy is now in effect for the Hamilton School District.

Starting Monday, Jan. 6, all K-4 students are being bused directly to Willow Springs Learning Center. Morning route assignments and pick-up/drop-off times will remain the same.

The Hamilton School District on Friday announced it is changing a school bus policy after a child was struck and killed in a parking lot.

What happened?

Students used to be brought to Silver Spring Intermediate School, where they then transferred to a different bus. That's where the boy was hit and killed on Thursday, Jan. 2.

It happened in the parking lot. It was the first day back to class from the holiday break.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department described it as an "accident," and deputies are still investigating the cause. Officials with the school bus company say they are fully cooperating with the investigation.

Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, located next to Silver Spring Intermediate School, held a prayer vigil for the boy on Friday night.
