Waukesha homicide; man accused of killing neighbor, hiding body

A Waukesha man is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse after police say he killed his neighbor and hid the body.

The body was found back on Oct. 30 in a wooded area near Moreland and North in Waukesha. But police say the victim was actually killed months earlier.

Prosecutors say the man responsible for the crime is 62-year-old Kevin Lychwick. Investigators believe he shot 56-year-old Carlos Maldonado in the head back in April. They say Lychwick wrapped the body in a plastic tarp and bound Maldonado's hands with duct tape.

Maldonado's family talked with police about their loved one's disappearance. Both Lychwick and the victim lived across from each other in the same apartment building.

A passerby found the body in October near the apartment and called police.

Waukesha Police Capt. Dan Baumann said Lychwick was caught on surveillance cameras walking to the woods in the middle of the night. Other evidence was later found in his apartment – and Baumann said the gun used to kill Maldonado was found in Lychwick's car. A note in Lychwick's apartment made police even more concerned.

"He was a detail-oriented individual.  Some would say he’s creepy," Capt. Baumann said. "We believe he had a hit-list.  We believe that he had information that he had grievances with others.  Fortunately, those others were not local."

Police do not believe there are any other victims.

Lychwick made his initial appearance in Waukesha County court on Monday, Dec. 9. Cash bond was set at $5 million.

As a condition of bond, and for the safety of everyone else living in that building, Lychwick is ordered not to have any contact with his neighbors or anyone on the list.

Accused, victim were neighbors

Again, both Lychwick and Maldonado lived in the same apartment building. FOX6 News spoke with the property owner on Monday, who said this story has been heartbreaking.

The property owner said Lychwick and Maldonado lived across the hall from each other, but he did not know if the two had any relationship outside of being neighbors. The property owner told FOX6 News, both Lychwick and Maldonado were great tenants. Maldonado lived there for at least three years – and Lychwick lived there for seven.

Neighbors told FOX6 News they are shocked to hear Lychwick has been living in the building since the murder.

"I’m just as upset about it as everybody else and my heart breaks for everybody. For the person accused and the person that is the victim," said Jeff Solper, apartment property owner.

"Just being right in our backyard that’s really; that’s scary," said Deb Hernandez, a Waukesha resident.

Waukesha police said Lychwick is not talking to them.
