Competency evaluation for Sheboygan woman in 1957 death

SHEBOYGAN (AP) -- A 76-year-old Sheboygan woman must undergo an evaluation to see if she's competent to stand trial on charges that she killed her infant daughter 55 years ago.

Ruby Klokow has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her 7-month-old girl in 1957. A judge on Tuesday granted her attorney's request for an evaluation.

Prosecutor Joe DeCecco says the defense attorney didn't raise concerns about Klokow's memory so much as her ability to stay focused on specific questions. DeCecco says the concern is whether she's competent to assist in her own defense.

A message left for defense attorney Kirk Obear was not immediately returned.

A trial was to begin Sept. 10, but it will be pushed back pending the results of the competency test.
