Milw. man charged in 29th & Atkinson shooting involving assault weapon
MILWAUKEE (WITI) — 41-year-old Shawn Bridges of Milwaukee has been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred near 29th and Atkinson on Thursday, February 28th.
Bridges faces one count of first degree recklessly endangering safety, use of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and endangering safety by use of dangerous weapon (under the influence of an intoxicant) and obstructing/resisting an officer.
Police say Bridges, who has an extensive criminal record got out of his car near 29th and Atkinson on Milwaukee’s north side on February 28th and opened fire with an assault-style rifle on 10 people nearby. Two people, a man and a woman, were struck by the gunfire and wounded.
The criminal complaint in this case indicates an officer observed a group of about 10 people standing on the corner near West Ruby Street — and observed a man standing nearby, holding a black Glock handgun facing toward the ground.
Officers later observed Bridges advancing towards the group, holding an assault weapon and shooting toward the crowd — according to the complaint. Then, Bridges got into a Ford Expedition and drove away from the scene.
Bridges was eventually stopped by police — but ran from officers on foot. Officers gave chase, and two officers slipped on ice and fell to the ground. One officer sustained injuries during this chase.
Eventually, a K-9 officer was able to apprehend Bridges.
A physician later determined that Bridges’ BAC was .25 and his blood indicated the presence of marijuana — according to the criminal complaint.
Officers located an assault rifle with one round of ammunition in the chamber and a 30-round capacity magazine containing five remaining unspent rounds of ammunition. Officers also located an empty, 30-round capacity magazine, an unopened can of Milwaukee’s Best beer and assorted identifiers belonging to Bridges.
The man who was injured, 30-year-old Elliot Brown was shot in the leg. He reported hearing about 17 gunshots while fleeing from Bridges — before he noticed he had been shot. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The female who was injured, 22-year-old Jessica Bryant was shot in the right foot, and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
