Brewers winning ways end in loss to Lee, Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (WITI)-- After ending May with a win, only their 6th of the month, and then starting June with a win, the Brewers couldn't make it 3 in a row as they lost to the Phillies 7-5 Sunday.

The Brewers had to dig themselves out of a hole early, mainly because of Philadelphia's Domonic Brown. He got things started for the Phillies in the bottom of the first inning when he blasted a 3 run home run off of Brewers' starter Mike Fiers. They'd add 2 more and take a 5-0 lead into the 2nd.

That's when Brown delivered again. This time he lined a ball to right that ended up rolling to the wall. Jimmy Rollins scored and Brown wound up on 3rd with a triple, part of a 2 run inning that ended Fiers day early.

Cliff Lee baffled Brewers hitters throughout much of the game, striking out 11 over 7.2 innings.

But in the 8th, the veteran lefty was lifted with the bases loaded, giving Jonathan Lucroy a chance to close the gap. He came through with what looked to be his 4th home run of the series, a grand slam. However, the ball hit off of the railing above the fence in left and bounced back onto the field. After the umpires initially ruled it a grand slam, they reversed the call after reviewing the replay and ruled it a 3 run triple instead. That made it 7-4 Phillies going to the 9th inning.

Once again, the Brewers would rally. Jeff Bianchi singled home Alex Gonzalez to make it 7-5 Phillies. Milwaukee would get runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Nori Aoki popped up for the 2nd out. Then Martin Maldonado, pinch hitting, flew out to shallow center to end the threat and the game.

The Brewers did win their 1st series since April after dropping 9 straight. They'll be back at Miller Park Monday when the Oakland A's are in town for a 3 game series followed by a 4 game series with the Phillies.
