Ice on Lake Michigan

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — The National Weather Service (NWS) has posted some satellite images that illustrate the deterioration of the ice on Lake Michigan as a result of strong winds and warmer temperatures late last week.

Take a look at the animation below — which begins February 11th and includes images from February 19th, 22nd and 23rd.

Officials with the NWS say the last two images from the 22nd and 23rd show that the ice was beginning to reform and thicken over the nearshore and open waters of western Lake Michigan due to the return of the persistent cold.

The NWS says cold, below normal temperatures will persist this week resulting in more ice reforming on Lake Michigan.
