Forced to jump: Three escape out a bedroom window after fire breaks out above Tappers Bar in Johnson Creek
JOHNSON CREEK (WITI) -- Johnson Creek Fire officials late Saturday night responded to a fire at the Tappers bar -- on Milwaukee Street in Johnson Creek.
Fire officials responded to the scene around 11:20 p.m. Saturday.
According to Fire officials, the fire was located in a second floor apartment.
Meanwhile, the bar below was packed.
"The bar was still operating downstairs. They didn't even know the upstairs was on fire," Johnson Creek Fire EMS Chief Jim Wolf said.
Drinks and appetizers were abandoned once people saw the flames shooting from the upstairs window.
Three people were inside the apartment. Fire officials were able to get them out through a back window.
A woman who lives in that apartment tells FOX6 News she was sleeping when a roommate woke her.
When he opened the door to her bedroom, she saw flames up through the ceiling.
The three people who were inside jumped out a back window and onto the roof of a smoker's porch at Tapper's bar.
A customer saw them, and stacked a couple picnic tables below.
Then, the three people jumped down into his arms.
"He doubled up the picnic tables and stood there and let us all three jump into his arms off the roof," one of the people who had to jump to safety said.
One person suffered burns, according to Fire officials.
Additionally, a firefighter was overcome by heat/exhaustion.
"We're blessed. We're alive. That's all that matters. You're just amazed when you picture that wave of fire going through that ceiling that we're all alive. That's all I gotta say man," one of the people who had to jump to safety said.
"It was a hot fire. It was very hot. We basically hit the upstairs apartment through the windows with our deluge gun, which knocked the fire down considerably," Chief Wolf said.
Fire officials say the inside of the apartment where the fire broke out will need to be redone -- but the bar only suffered water damage.
Fire officials believe this fire started in an upstairs kitchen.
Seven departments helped to put out this fire.
Tappers Bar issued the following message on its Facebook page:
"Very sad news tonight....a fire started in the upstairs apartment, not sure what exactly was the cause. A lot of damage was done, and thankfully no one was seriously injured. We want to give a big thanks to the Johnson Creek, Lake Mills, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Rome, and Helenville fire departments. We will keep everyone posted as we know more."
