(WITI) — New video recorded during NASA’s Orion return through Earth’s atmosphere gives viewers a taste of what the vehicle endured as it returned through Earth’s atmosphere during its December 5th flight test.

According to the YouTube information, the video begins 10 minutes before Orion’s 11:29 a.m. EST splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, just as the spacecraft was beginning to experience Earth’s atmosphere. Peak heating from the friction caused by the atmosphere rubbing against Orion’s heat shield comes less than two minutes later, and the footage shows the plasma created by the interaction change from white to yellow to lavender to magenta as the temperature increases.

The video goes on to show the deployment of Orion’s parachutes and the final splash as it touches down.

Beautiful and enchanting. What an amazing accomplishment. With everything NASA and the various private space agencies are doing, all these incredible goals they’re making happen, I fail to understand why they use obsolete video cameras for footage like this. This looks it was shot in the 60s. Why not stick a small 4K camera on there and get pristine footage of this experience? Why skimp on the video, when it’s so vital to capturing the essence and magic of the scientific and creative achievement?

I love the fact that we are once again even thinking of manned space exploration.
But Orion? the thing has 319 cubic feet of habitable space. The trip to Mars is say nine months long. One way. Really?
