Harley-Davidson says sales increased 15% in 2014, officials talk about future of electric bike

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Harley-Davidson says the company had a good 2014.

The Milwaukee motorcycle maker rumbled to a 15% increase in profits for the year. The company also matched analysts' expectations for the fourth quarter.

The net income for the year was over $840 million -- compared to $730 million in 2013.

One of the big reasons was sales to the Asia-Pacific area -- a 12% increase in sales.

Meanwhile, Harley-Davidson says they are confident they will one day produce an electric motorcycle.

Last year, they introduced the "LiveWire" electric motorcycle. The unveil included a testing tour at 30 dealerships and over 6,800 demo rides.

Harley officials say the timeframe for moving forward from prototype to production remains uncertain. The biggest need for improvement involves battery capacity to extend the range beyond 50 miles.
