Stepping down: Accused of sexual assault, Sheboygan alderman Kevin Matichek has resigned

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned Kevin Matichek, a Sheboygan alderman accused of repeated sexual assault of a 15-year-old boy has resigned his position with the Sheboygan Common Council.

Matichek submitted a letter to the Common Council on Wednesday, February 11th.

FOX6 News has obtained a copy of that letter. It reads:

"Dear Colleagues:

In light of the criminal accusation against me, it is clear that I am currently unable to effectively serve in my position as alderman for the City of Sheboygan. Because I do not want the charge to detract from the City's business, please accept this letter as my official resignation as Fourth District Alderman on the Sheboygan Common Council.

Very truly yours,

Kevin Matichek"

33-year-old Matichek is officially charged -- accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. Sheboygan's police chief says even though the charges filed against Matichek involve one individual, he says they have at least two victims -- a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, and they're looking into the possibility there could be other victims as well.

"We expect aldermen to be role models in our community," Sheboygan Mayor Michael Vandersteen said.

Matichek faces one felony count of repeated sexual assault of a child for alleged actions that occurred between June 1st, 2014 and September 30th, 2014. We're told the victim is now 15, but was 14 at the time these alleged incidents began.

A criminal complaint filed against Matichek says Sheboygan police received an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers on February 5th, 2015 -- indicating a 15-year-old boy may have been involved in an "intimate relationship" with an "older guy."

"There are two different versions of how he came in contact with this individual. (Matichek) indicated he met him on Facebook. The juvenile indicates he met him at a local coffee shop," Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco said.

A Sheboygan police detective spoke with an individual who reported seeing the boy coming into a restaurant with "a guy double his age" named "Kevin." That individual told police the boy had confided in him that he had had sex with Kevin, according to the complaint.

Police spoke with the boy, who initially denied any sexual contact with Kevin, but eventually admitted they had an intimate relationship, police say. The criminal complaint details several sexual encounters between the two.

"If these allegations are true, it involves quite a bit of deception and predatory behavior on his part as well, so I have concerns for the community's safety also," Court Commissioner Rebecca Persick said.

Police spoke with Kevin Matichek, who admitted to having a friendship with the boy. Matichek denied any sexual contact with the boy, but did admit to kissing him, according to the complaint. Eventually, Matichek told police he and the boy were "dating," saying the boy was the youngest male he has ever been involved with -- but Matichek continued to deny having any sexual contact with the boy.

Matichek served on Sheboygan's City Council for four years. He is being held on $75,000 cash bond.

"Mr. Matichek does have some ties to the community, but he's facing 40 years incarceration. Whenever someone is facing that much incarceration I obviously have grave concern about them coming to court when they're supposed to," Persick said.

The District Attorney calls this case "solid," and that's why they've chosen to move forward with charges as they continue to investigate and look for other victims.

Anyone who may have information for police is encouraged to give them a call.
