MADISON — Officials say a 25-year-old construction worker died after falling 60 feet at the site of a future apartment building in downtown Madison.

Police say the accident happened around 11 a.m. Monday. The worker from McGann Construction died later at a hospital.

Company president Bryan McGann identifies the victim as Chris Lord, of Dane. He says Lord had worked as a carpenter for the company for three years.

The Madison office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration says it’s investigating to determine whether any violations of safety regulations contributed to the accident. It says falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry.

The project, the Captiol’s Edge Apartments, is scheduled to open in January.
