NEW JERSEY — A New Jersey family is finally back home after they were stuck in Portugal for months.

Fred Spratt and his wife Kim went to Portugal in May for a “baby-moon.”

Kim Spratt went into labor 13 weeks early — giving birth to twins (a boy and a girl).

“It was a crash course in becoming a father,” Fred Spratt said.

Unfortunately, the baby boy did not survive.

“We feel like we’re coming home incomplete. We’re happy to be home, but it does feel like there’s a part that’s missing,” Fred Spratt said.

After the babies were born, the couple’s insurance company initially denied them coverage for medical transportation when they tried to bring their little girl, Hayden, home.

Elected officials helped them, and late last week. the insurance company reversed its decision, so the family began their cross-Atlantic trip on a private jet with a company that specializes in medical transport.

Home video showed the crew carefully taking Hayden off the plane.

“She slept a lot, and she was awake for quite a bit, as well,” Fred Spratt said.

Hayden will now have to stay in the hospital for some time, as the family grieves the loss of Hudson.

“Their rooms are gorgeous and all set up for Hudson and Hayden, but my daughter wants Hudson to be remembered. And he will be remembered,”  Kim’s mother, Donna Kirzow said.

Fred and Kim say they plan to take their little girl back to Portugal some day to meet the doctors and nurses now considered family.
