Update: Home damaged by fire at N. 1st & Chambers did not have working smoke detectors

MILWAUKEE -- FOX6 News is learning more about a Milwaukee fire where two people were injured. The blaze occurred Friday night, December 25th near N. 1st and Chambers Street. Fire officials say there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

The Milwaukee Fire Department is still looking into the cause of the fire -- it is an ongoing investigation.

Officials were called to the home near N. 1st and Chambers just after 9:15 p.m.

Authorities say two people escaped from the home suffering injuries. One may have jumped from a window -- both were taken to the hospital.

"We had one toward the front of the structure, one toward the back end," said Deputy Chief Terry Lintonen, Milwaukee Fire Department.

Firefighters say there was substantial damage to the first floor and the fire may have started in the kitchen.

There were no working smoke detectors inside the home, according to fire officials.

"It is very frustrating, especially when we think about people being injured and the possibility of early detection," said Lintonen.

It's a problem they are trying to change by offering free smoke detectors to Milwaukee residents.

"We will make arrangements to meet with those folks, we will put smoke detectors up, we will check the smoke detectors they have, we will talk to the occupants, including the kids, to make sure they have a fire safe plan.  A real comprehensive plan for them to get out of that home, meet up and not have this type of incident that we had last night," said Lintonen.

A message that has been repeated, firefighters want the community to start listening.

"I hope that we get the message out of how important it is that we have working smoke detectors in each and every residence of the city," said Lintonen.
