MILWAUKEE -- They call themselves the "Angels Among Us" and now they need your saving grace. A group of local women have come together with one mission -- helping the homeless. But the expected cold weekend weather has put a big chill on their efforts.
The volunteers do homeless outreach and serve meals several nights a week. They also hand out clothing and personal hygiene items all on their own dime. But there is one thing they can't provide: warmth, and that's where they are hoping you can step in.
Trudging through snowstorms and high winds, all to pass coffee and food through a chain-link fence. The group of women with Angels Among Us doesn't mind venturing out to help those who are battling with the frigid elements on a daily basis.
"They are just having a hard enough time keeping themselves alive," said Angels Among Us Vice President, Charvonne Carlson.
As they provide essentials to the homeless...
"They need our help," said Angels Among Us President, Kristy Jackson.
One thing is desperately needed this upcoming weekend: warmth.
"We are begging for a space at least at a minimum when it's Sunday night, and it's -8° and it doesn't count the windchill, we have some place to bring them indoors," said Jackson.
President Jackson says the need for shelter especially on the south side is imperative.
"As far as shelters they're almost all located downtown areas and north side," said Jackson.
During the last cold snap, two churches were kind enough to open their doors for them.
"We need more places to take the people that don't necessarily fall into chronically homeless criteria, they are falling through our cracks that's why we are able to fill a shelter of 70 people," said Jackson.
Now a voice for those who are down and out, they make a plea to the public.
"Churches, community center, anybody that will be willing to open their doors we need four walls, a roof and some warmth. A place to put these people we will do the rest. We have the manpower, the resources -- just give us the building," said Jackson.
Since Friday morning alone, some aid has already poured in to Angels Among Us, but help is still needed during the evenings and overnight as we expect those bitter temperatures.
Angels Among Us is looking for overnight space to hold a warming shelter Saturday night, January 16th through Tuesday night, January 19th for about 50 adults and children.
