Call for a shooting in Mequon that led to lockdown at schools believed to be a prank call

MEQUON -- Mequon police say they believe a call regarding a shooting on N. Range Line Road that came in on Monday, January 25th was a hoax/prank call.

The call came in just before noon from a young man who indicated someone had been shot on N. Range Line Road near W. Norway Drive.

Range Line Road was closed to traffic for about 45 minutes.

Range Line, Lakeshore and Lumen Christi Schools were placed on lockdown.

Officers were able to make contact with people at several homes in the area -- and they could not locate any evidence of a shooting or a victim.

Range Line Road was reopened, and the lockdown was lifted at the schools around 12:35 p.m.

"We take these types of calls very seriously. While the person who made the call may find it amusing, this is a dangerous situation that puts many people at risk, including the responding officers and the community at large. Investigators will make every attempt to identify the prank caller and the appropriate criminal charges will be filed accordingly," Mequon Police Chief Steve Graff said in a statement.
