"Happy to do it:" Realtors volunteer their time to clean up after January fire at Camp Whitcomb/Mason

MILWAUKEE -- In late January, a popular kids campground was ravaged by fire, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. On Thursday, May 12th, there was a little outside help cleaning up at Camp Whitcomb/Mason.

"We have 306 acres, and there's a lot of work that needs to be done," said Sarah Resch, executive director at Camp Whitcomb/Mason.

On Thursday, Keller Williams Real Estate agents trekked through Hartland's Camp Whitcomb/Mason in an effort to get it set for a sensational season.

"Just being part of the rebirth of what this camp is doing is an awesome thing for us. We're happy to do it," said Toni Spott with Keller Williams Realty.

The group of 40 agents joined thousands of others throughout the U.S. and Canada -- volunteering their services during the company's "RED Day" event. RED Day, which stands for Renew, Energize and Donate, is Keller Williams Realty's annual day of service.

"We take the day off and we volunteer in our communities. We give back to our communities in any way possible," said Spott.

"They're gonna do our Adopt-A-Highway cleanup for us, and then come back and work on our pizza garden," said Resch.

But first, the group gathered garlic mustard in a spot which serves as the summer camp destination for some four dozen local Boys and Girls Clubs.

The cleanup Thursday came just a few months after a fire destroyed an equipment building on the property, causing more than $300,000 worth of damage.

"We're definitely on the recovery end of everything," said Resch.

With Camp Whitcomb/Mason staff members spending so much time on this recovery, there's been little time for other projects -- including garlic mustard maintenance.

"It was a lot of work for our property and grounds staff, so this work that they're able to help us out with is an amazing help,"said Resch.

RED Day takes place every year on the second Thursday of May.  A Keller Williams representative says, worldwide, RED Day involves donations of both time and money from tens of thousands of company employees.
