Calling all Pokemon Trainers! Play Pokemon Go in Lake Park; help the Wisconsin Humane Society

MILWAUKEE -- Calling all Pokemon Trainers! There is a Pokemon Go event scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31st in Milwaukee's Lake Park -- and it will serve as a fundraiser for the Wisconsin Humane Society!

The Wisconsin Humane Society has teamed up with "Walk for a Dog," a smartphone app that allows you to generate donations for your shelter of choice simply by walking -- with or without an actual dog.

Pokemon Trainers are invited to show up at Lake Park Sunday and join the crowd weaving through the park in search of the best and rarest Pokemon -- with the "Walk for a Dog" app running in the background.

You'll be able to simultaneously collect Pokemon and raise money that will benefit the animals at the Wisconsin Humane Society.

WHS officials will be on hand to collect monetary and in-kind donations at the waterfall during this event.

Pokemon Trainers are welcome to bring their own dog(s) to the event, but that is not required. Dog owners should be sure to bring along baggies for cleanup.

WHS officials say this fundraiser is the first of kids kind -- and they're hopeful the gaming community will show up and help out.

You may recall, last Sunday, July 24th hundreds showed up at Lake Park amid a Heat Advisory and heat indices in the triple digits to play Pokemon Go -- the app with the most Apple downloads in its first week. Ever.

"This is actually slow compared to what it really normally is," Nickolas Doxtater said.

The Pokemon Trainers said huge crowds in Lake Park are the new normal since the game's release.

"People were telling us 'you gotta go to Lake Park. Gotta go to Lake Park. It's just a great way to explore nature and meet other people," Melissa Bante said.

The augmented reality game uses smartphone cameras to superimpose the cute, digital creatures on real world settings. The mash-up app encourages people to gain points by chasing the perky creatures around their own neighborhoods.

The game has been praised for getting people up and outdoors.
