Collision between car, semi causes wreck in Hale Interchange and shuts down freeway

MILWAUKEE -- A two-vehicle crash involving a semi caused the 18-wheeler to overturn in the Hale Interchange on Tuesday morning, Dec. 10. The wreck forced law enforcement to shut down the freeway in the area beginning around 6 a.m.

Officials say their initial investigation indicates both vehicles were traveling from the north to the east in the Hale Interchange, the semi was in the center lane and the passenger vehicle was in the right lane. There are conflicting accounts of how the initial contact occurred. But once contact was made the passenger vehicle lost control, crashed through the right guardrail and came to rest in the ditch approximately 100 feet off the roadway. The semi swerved to the right, causing it to tip on to its passenger's side, sliding approximately 200 feet colliding with the right guardrail and crushing the right barrier wall. Traffic was reduced to two lanes, due to the crash and debris.

Greenfield Fire Department responded to the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

The entire scene was cleared and all lanes were reopened around 1:30 p.m.
