MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The American Red Cross is getting the word out about water safety. It's part of their Anti-Drowning Campaign.

According to a recent study, an average of 10 people die in the U.S. from unintentional drowning every day.

To lower that number this summer, the Red Cross is encouraging parents to educate themselves and their kids. One way is through swimming classes.

“They may think they're better swimmer than they actually are,” said Barbara Behling with the American Red Cross.

This applies not just to kids, but adults too. So how can you tell if you're ready for the water? Take this simple five- point test:

Of course keeping up on those skills, and learning more is important too, and one way to do that is through the Red Cross Mobile Swim App.

“It allows you to keep track of your kids’ skills. In fact, there are some tests there for the parents. Can your child put their face underwater? Can they tread water? If they fell into the deep end of the pool, could they come up by themselves? Those types of tests will help you gauge where your child is and get them into the proper swimming level,” said Behling.

The app allows you to enter all your children and their swim levels, so you'll always have a record of that. There's a variety of games and quizzes for kids.

“We feel if learning is fun, you're more likely to watch it, and remember it, and then act upon it,” said Behling.
