14-year-old boy pulled from Menomonee River has died

WAUWATOSA (WITI) -- It all happened down a path, in the river -- a busy afternoon at the park, turned tragic. The Milwaukee Medical Examiner confirms that the 14-year-old boy who was pulled from the water, had a pulse when being transported to the hospital, but has now died.

An unexpected scene at a Wauwatosa park -- lights and sirens change the mood from carefree, to concern.

"The sheriffs were out here," says witness Jodie Dandridge. "I thought they were patrolling but there were too many for this little parking lot."

At 3:09 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call reporting that a number of children went swimming in the Menomonee River, located in Hoyt Park, at 1800 N. Swan Blvd,, and one of the children did not resurface.

"A lady flagged us down saying that there was a kid in trouble," says witness Bert Restyanszki. "Went across the tracks down by the river, saw three boys and said one of their buddies went underneath the water."

A group gathered to help.

"There was another gentleman that was with me, he dove in...A police officer came by and a fire crew came in and starting wading in the waters," says Restyanszki.

Multiple rescue units from the Milwaukee Fire Department and Wauwatosa Fire Department responded to the scene.

Members of the MFD Dive Rescue Team located the child under water a short distance from where they were last observed.  Medical personnel started life-saving measures and the child was transported to Children's Hospital, where he later died.

Officials confirm that the boy was 14-years-old but a name has not yet been released. The incident is currently under investigation.
